Period of Purple Crying

PURPLE Header
PURPLE News
Summer 2013 edition
Greetings!

The Period of PURPLE Crying® program continues to grow and provide increased awareness about normal infant crying across the state of Kansas.
We have included some hightlights about the program and some additional information we hope you find helpful.  We are truly blessed to work with such amazing partners as you!  Thank you for helping us implement such an incredible campaign!
 Click for Babies 2013

Can you believe it is already time to start thinking about tiny purple hats again? The 2013 Click for Babies Campaign is off and running and we have no doubt we will reach our goal of 8,000 caps. Last year, we had over 9,800 hats turned in by an estimated 250+ volunteers from across the state. This year, many volunteers began calling in February Click for Babies 2012to see if we were participating in the campaign again, and to let us know they were going to continue to make hats! As of early July, we have already received close to 1,300 hats. This campaign has been such a huge success on so many levels and we are truly grateful for the volunteers’ time and effort. Plus, we are thankful to several health departments that found homes for many of the hats that were too big, or were not purple.

The hats will once again be distributed during the months of November and December as an added reminder that increased infant crying can be normal and that it is never okay to shake a baby. In promoting the Click for Babies campaign, we have educated thousands who would not have heard about the Period
Click for Babies 2013 of PURPLE Crying® from traditional sources through several statewide print
and online articles, television and radio interviews and the tremendous support we receive through social media. Check out our “Social Media” section of this newsletter for ways you can connect with us online.
Soothing Segment

The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome didn’t just make the DVD cases smaller, they added an entire segment on Soothing and Self-Care. If you and your staff have not already checked out this segment, please do! This bonus includes great information and gives parents and caregivers tools they can use to calm a crying baby. Also, the new segment acknowledges that “soothing works some of the time, but nothing works all of the time,” and includes material on how parents and caregivers can calm themselves down if they start to feel frustrated with the crying. The 17 minute segment is also a wonderful addition to child-birth classes, home visitors agendas, and other teaching opportunities that come outside of the hospital.

If you are a Dose 2 partner (not a hospital) and need a new version of the DVD, please contact Anne Auld for ordering information.

  purplecrying.info

Another great resource for families is www.purplecrying.info. This page, sponsored by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome, has been recently updated and is extremely user friendly. Included in the update are new sections “For Dads” and “Soothing”.

Languages

There have been few changes in how the DVDs are translated. Because of the inclusion for the new Soothing and Self-Care segment, there was no longer room for the additional 9 languages. However, those languages are still available for special order. The current DVD includes an English AND Spanish version of the original 10 minutes and the added Soothing and Self-Care in both languages.
From Heart to Home, Infant Adoption Program

As KCSL reflects on the last 120 years of services, adoption has been, and continues to be, an agency focus. From Heart to Home is a program available to help pregnant mothers and their partners decide if adoption is the right choice for them. This can be a very confusing and overwhelming decision.  From Heart to Home ofFrom Heart to Home Shoes Imagefers:

  • Crisis and/or pregnancy support services
  • Pre-postpartum counseling
  • Medical expenses related to the pregnancy and birth
  • Living and relocation (if requested) services
  • Assistance accessing post-pregnancy services, including education and life-skills planning

For more information, or to refer a client, call 1-877-581-5437. This line is staffed 24/7 and can be called in an emergency adoption situation.

Social Media

Follow the Click for Babies campaign, as well as all Prevent Child Abuse Kansas events and information, on Facebook.  We have already started receiving some super adorable caps and you can get a sneak-peak online. The page is also a great source for parenting and prevention tips and topics.

Do you enjoy Pinterest? So do we! Kansas Children’s Service
League now has several boards including topics Click for Babies Kansas, For those Who Foster and Adopt, Early Childhood and Mental Health. There are several fun boards with great ideas for helping families through the dreaded, “I’m Bored” stages of summer.  Check us out on Pinterest.

It’s Almost State Fair Time

I hope some of you are working on items to go into the state fair. I, Donna Dyer, have 6 items so far. I believe Tamara has a couple. It would be really nice to have more people represent KS My Stitch Guild. Don’t forget the deadline to enter is August 15th. You have between August 16th and August 25th to register also, but there will be a fee per item. If you are planning on dropping off the items yourself you can take them to the Domestic Arts building Monday, Sept. 2, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm, Tuesday, Sept. 3, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm & Wednesday, Sept. 4, 8:00 am – 10:00 am. Then you can pick up your items Sunday, Sept. 15, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm & Monday, Sept. 16, 8:00 am – 1:00 pm. NO EXCEPTIONS! From experience if you get there on Sunday the line starts forming around 5:00. They will not open the doors one minute before 6:00.

If you would like Donna Dyer to take your items up for you I will be doing this on Tuesday, Sept 3rd. Bring your items to the next guild meeting labeled with your name and the category you entered in. I would be more than happy to take those up for you. If you have any questions feel free to contact me, Donna Dyer, at chikwithyarn@gmail.com
